LOVE IS ALL WE NEED

Television, radio, newspapers and magazines are so pre-occupied with reporting stories of hate, violence, gossip and negativity.  I understand the need to inform the general public of issues happening around the world but to do so 24 hours a day and 7 days a week – it’s too much!  Also – without outlets reporting unbiased and newsworthy stories, we would be unable to act to ensure a positive outcome is achieved.

Today…I want to focus on LOVE in music.  There have been so many songs written about love – most are usually about heartbreak due to relationships ending.  There are also many songs that celebrate the positivity of love and how love can make everyone feel great….here are some examples via song lyrics:

“Love is all we need
To make everything complete
If we try to live together and be happy
You and me are one and we’ve only just begun
So let’s make a new beginning have some fun”

Love Is All We Need – Mary J. Blige – from the album ‘Share My World’ released in February 1997.

“What is it that can make a lost soul found?
Love
And what is it that can make the coldest day seem warm?
Love
And what is it that can bring a smile through to strangers?
Love love love love”

Power of Love – Deee-Lite – from the album ‘World Clique’ released in August 1990.

“If you wear your feelings
the way you wear your clothes
Maybe people would believe
in what you’re saying,
Heaven knows, heaven knows “

Love Song – Kristine W – from the album ‘Land of the Living’ released in July 1996.

“When everyone else
Is more comfortable
Remaining voiceless
Rather than fighting for humans
That have had their rights stolen
I might not be the same
But that’s not important
No freedom ’til we’re equal
Damn right I support it
I don’t know”

Same Love – Macklemore and Ryan Lewis featuring Mary Lambert – from the album ‘The Heist’ released in October 2012.

“There is no comprehension
There is real isolation
There is so much destruction
What I want is a celebration
And I know I can feel bad
When I get in a bad mood
And the world can look so sad
Only you make me feel good”

Love Profusion – Madonna – from the album ‘American Life’ released in April 2003.

“You’ll be given love, you’ll be taken care of
You’ll be given love, you have to trust it
Maybe not from the sources you have poured yours
Maybe not from the directions you are staring at
Trust your head around, it’s all around you
All is full of love, all around you
You just ain’t receiving, your phone is off the hook
Your doors are all shut”

Bjork – All Is Full of Love – from the album ‘Homogenic’ released in September 1997.

You can find love anywhere and everywhere, all you have to do is be receptive.  Open your eyes, open your mind and accept it.

Love is on the radio, on the subway, in the park, on television, across the street or on the other side of the world, it is beside you and inside you….

TAKE BACK WHAT DOESN’T BELONG TO ME………….

Thirteen years ago, Sinead O’Connor released an album entitled;  Faith & Courage.  For me, it is quite possibly her best album.  The songs on this album seem to be written to heal, to forgive, to let go of resentment and anger and to embrace spirituality.  I find when artists find spirituality – they tend to create some of their best work, for example;  MadonnaRay of Light, Alanis MorissetteFlavours of Entanglement and Sinead O’ConnorFaith & Courage.

Music is powerful and can lift your spirits – whether they were intended to do so or not.  There are many songs that can send you to a higher place or just make you feel great and happy, songs such as;

Bobby McFerrin – Don’t Worry Be Happy
Deee-Lite – Love Is Everything/River of Freedom/Power of Love/Groove Is In The Heart
Vernessa Mitchell – This Joy
Enigma – Sadeness Part I/Rivers of Belief/Return To Innocence
Sandra – Love Is The Price/The Art of Love
Elton John – Sacrifice/Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word/Philadelphia Freedom
George Michael – Freedom/Faith/Move On/Star People
Kristine W – I’ll Be Your Light/Land of the Living/Stronger/Be Alright
Carrie Underwood – Jesus Take The Wheel
Ultra Nate – Free
Cyndi Lauper – Shine/You Don’t Know/True Colours
Billie Ray Martin – Your Loving Arms/Hands Up and Amen
Kylie Minogue – On A Night Like This/I Believe In You/All The Lovers
Mistress Barbara – Dance Me to the End of Love
Lady Gaga – Born This Way
Katy Perry – Firework
Black Eyed Peas – I Got A Feeling/Where Is The Love

We all have songs that make us feel good and are therapeutic and this is a great thing.  Music should help us forgive, remove resentments, release pain and anger but most of all, it should make you feel good.

Here is a song on Sinead O’Connor’s album that helps me release some of my ‘negative’ emotions.  Here are the lyrics, the audio follows:

WHAT DOESN’T BELONG TO ME

The woman named Iris gave birth to the goddess
In her son who can’t say his name
Because of all the pain
I miss you, but I’m glad you’re gone
I want you but I’m not alone
I’m haunted by you
But I’ll get you gone if it takes me all my life long
Take back the pain you gave me
Take back what doesn’t belong to me
Take back the shame you gave me
Take back what doesn’t belong to me
I’m Irish, I’m English, I’m Moslem, I’m Jewish,
I’m a girl, I’m a boy
And the goddess meant for me only joy
And real love requires you, give up those loves
Whom you think you love best
Love puts you through the test
And only loyal love will bring me happinessTake back the rage you gave me
Take back the hatred you gave me for me
Take back the anger that nearly killed me
Take back what doesn’t belong to me

And real love requires you
Give up those loves
That you think you love best
Love puts you through the test
And only loyal love will bring you happiness

Take back the pain you gave me
Take back what doesn’t belong to me
Take back the blame you gave me
Take back what doesn’t belong to me
Take back what doesn’t belong to me
Take back what doesn’t belong to me

LOVE IS EVERYTHING – THANK YOU LADY KIER!

Here is a classic vibe from the amazing and talented dance trio – Deee-Lite from 1992.  The song is hauntingly beautiful and ahead of the game – after 20 years it still is relevant and ‘chillout’ before chill was cool.  Deee-Lite released 3 studion albums in the 90’s – The fabulouslness of World Clique (1990), Infinity Within (1992) and Dewdrops in the Garden (1994).  Dewdrops was completely ground-breaking and has completely stood the test of time (along with their other 2 releases).  Each time I revisit the music of Deee-Lite and the fantastic vocal talents of Lady Kier, I keep asking myself:  “what happened to the good old days of dance music, real dance music – not what the pop artists of today are calling it.  Where artists had a message – whether it was social or politically and injected their message with a beat, a postive vibe and made it fun?”  Deee-Lite was pivotal in infusing their political and social message into their extra funky and housey vibes.

Lady Kier continues to tour and belts out Deee-Lites past hits and continues to inspire us with her own original and current hits “Bullet Proof” being her latest and absolutely fantastic house vibe.  I look forward to seeing Lady Kier in the future doing both gigs as performer and dj (hopefully she joins us in Toronto again for Gay Pride 2013 – she was fantastic last year!)

In the meantime – enjoy this classic vibe and escape to a time of innocence love and where ‘real’ dance music ruled!

LOVE IS EVERYTHING

I woke in the middle of the night
Just to see how you look when you’re sleeping
I don’t need a conversation
I just want to feel your vibration
I know your dreaming
And I hope it’s about me

Real…
Sometimes you talk too much
No words only melodies
And there’s nothing else to say
Nothing else to say
The words just get in the way
I’ve got to find our melody

Bring it back to me
Bring it back to me
Cause I know that you can feel it when it’s real
There’s a smile on your face
And it reminds me
How much I like my place
Right next to you

Real…
Follow your dreams
No matter how far they seem
Searching for the reason
The mystery
We can only dream
