NEPAL EARTHQUAKE – LET’S HELP!

A 7.8 magnitue earthquake has struck near the Nepal capital of Kathmandu.  The district is facing food and water shortage and requires much medical aide. It is possible the death toll could reach 10,000.

In order to bring attention to this disaster and in hopes of raising money for the the relief effort, I am asking all readers to purchase a copy of my book, ‘Love Can Be Found Anywhere:  Inspiring Affirmations For Life’.  For every book that is purchased in May, I will be donating 50% of profits to earthquake relief efforts.

RELIGIOUS FREEDOM LEGISLATION

According to a 2014 poll conducted by The Washington Post and ABC News, 50 percent of Americans say that the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection gives gays the right to marry – outside of the constitutional question, 59 percent say they support same-sex marriage.  With all this support and acceptance, why is it that some feel it is okay to discriminate against a group of people based on religious freedom?

Indiana Senate Bill 101, titled the Religions Freedom Restoration Act, is a law in the U.S. state of Indiana, which allows individuals and companies to assert that their exercise of religion has been, or is likely to be, substantially burdened as a defense in legal proceedings.  This allows businesses to refuse potential customers based on their religious beliefs.  Personally, I believe that an individuals right to practice religion should not impede on that individuals choice to service the public.  That individual made a decision to be a business owner not a preacher, minister or pastor.  Their religious beliefs should not give them a right to discriminate against anyone.

This type of legislation is dangerous and is reminiscent of the days before the civil rights movement when people of colour couldn’t use the same rest rooms as white people.  Whose to say that the discrimination will end with gays and lesbians?  What if someone is uncomfortable doing business with someone who belongs to another religion?  Legislation like this protects individuals who have a certain belief system and there are so many people who don’t fit into that category.  Do atheist business owners deny business to those who belong to individuals that prescribe to religious ideologies?  Do Catholic business owners serve only Catholics?

By signing this bill into law, Governor Mike Pence, has created something I believe to be good.  Firstly, he has opened the eyes of many that discrimination is alive and well in the United States of America.  It’s quite unsettling that those who believe their religious freedoms are being threatened are exercising their God-given right to fundamentally go against the basic teachings of Jesus Christ or God.  Doesn’t that seem hypocritical to you?  Secondly, this legislation is creating dialogue.  People are talking about this and bringing to light the simple notion that religion is a choice and should not determine legislation.  Ask yourself – who really is the victim, the business or the people who have gone to that specific business to buy their service or product only to be denied that service or product?

I was brought up in a Catholic household.  My parents then decided to ‘test drive’  a new religious ideology by practicing the Jehovah’s Witness religion – which my siblings and I had to go along with.  My high school was composed of mostly kids from a Jewish faith.  So what did I learn from religion?  Confusion, anger, depression, fear, anxiety, hypocrisy and hate.  I learned that most religions don’t accept you if you are born gay.  You are not as appreciated if you are a woman.  Slavery is okay.  Killing is okay.  I learned that there is much more violence and separation of people in religion than there is love.

For me, religious freedom legislation isn’t something that brings people together.  It creates more negativity and divides people.  Religious freedom legislation doesn’t serve the benefits of all, it only serves the benefits of a few and that does not create positive change in our world.

VACCINATIONS: RIGHT TO CHOOSE.

I believe that a proper diet, exercise and meditation is superior to maintaining good health.  The studies continue to show the amazing health benefits of what a plant-based diet can do in terms of lowering cholesterol, reversing diabetes, high blood pressure and even curing cancer.  We know and understand that putting toxins into your body is not good.  Processed foods, factory farming, pesticides in our soil, pollution and chemicals in our water all contribute to poor health.  Saying this, why is there a huge and sudden push for vaccinations?  Is there really a sudden outbreak of diseases that we must be vaccinated against?  And if so, should we, as individuals, have the right to choose whether or not we want to be vaccinated?

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Why the sudden push for vaccination?
  • Who tends to benefit from mandatory vaccinations?
  • Is there a life/death outbreak of disease that requires vaccinations?
  • Shouldn’t putting toxins into your body be the choice of each individual within the legal age?
  • What will mandatory vaccinations impose on us next?

I understand that people who are in favour of vaccination are afraid for their well-being and the well-being of their children but, how about the rights of those who are against the vaccinations and their well-being?

I know many people out there are inclined to believe that everything that our government legislates is in our best interests.  Need I remind you of the following the government has indicated was in our best interests:

  • Slavery/Segregation
  • The Viet Nam War
  • 9/11
  • The Invasion of Iraq
  • Mandatory HPV inoculation
  • Monsanto
  • The lack of banking regulations around the world
  • Support of BIG CORPORATIONS (oil/agriculture/pharmaceuticals)
  • Women’s reproductive rights (abortion laws)

We should all have the right to choose what we do with and to our bodies.  What happens when the right of free choice is taken away from us?  What next?  Will governments instruct women on when and how many kids they should have?  What if a political party is pro-life, will they instill legislation that will not allow the women’s right to choose what she does with her body?

You can have micro-chips implanted into our pets to help us locate them if they are lost.  There continues to be debate on the same type of micro-chips for humans.  Apparently, this chip would list all previous medical history of that person.  But is that the only information that chip would include about a person?  Would this be another way for governments to keep track of us.  These types of initiatives or inventions seem more to the benefit of our governments to instill more control.  Is that no different from vaccinations?

The bottom line is – if you want to trust that vaccinations are in you and your family’s best interest, then vaccinate.  However, don’t impose your views and judgements on those who decide not to.  I personally, do not want more or my free choice taken away from me.

Here are some videos on the subject of vaccination:

DOES EATING MEAT HAVE AN IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT?

There are many negative health implications related to a diet that is mainly made up of red meat.  In the last century, there have been huge increases in obesity due to poor diet and nutrition.  People are more keen to visit a fast-food restaurants rather than preparing their own food.  Fast-food corporations, with their endless marketing budgets, entice people with processed foods that are cheap and unhealthy and reaping the benefits of their unwillingness to take a more proactive approach to their health and well-being.

What are the benefits to a diet high in meat consumption? (They are not really benefits):

  • High cholesterol and heart disease due to high fat and cholesterol content.
  • Conventionally raised beef contains hormones and antibiotics.
  • Processed meats (bacon, ham and sausage) are unhealthy due to their high fat, preservative and salt content.
  • The mistreatment and murder of animals.
  • Obesity.
  • Linked to diseases such as diabetes, heart attack and cancer.

What many people are not aware of are the implications a diet high in meat has on our environment.  Factory farming is not only promoting cruel and the unethical treatment of many animals, it has a devastating effect on the environment, especially when we are seeing water shortages across the globe.  Here are some of the environmental implications:

  • Animal agriculture is responsible for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions, more than the combined exhaust from all transportation.
  • Livestock and their byproducts account for at least 32,000 million tons of carbon dioxide (Co2) per year, or 51% of all worldwide greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Methane is 25 – 100 times more destructive than CO2.
  • Methane has a global warming power 86 times that of CO2.
  • Livestock is responsible for 65% of all emissions of nitrous oxide – a greenhouse gas 296 times more destructive than carbon dioxide and which stays in the atmosphere for 150 years.
  • Emissions for agriculture projected to increase 80% by 2050.
  • US methane emissions from livestock and natural gas are nearly equal.
  • Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) water use ranges from 70 – 140 million gallons annually in comparison, animal agriculture water consumption ranges from 34 – 76 trillion gallons annually.
  • Agriculture is responsible for 80 – 90% of US water consumption.

All above facts are available via the following link:  http://www.cowspiracy.com/facts/

Our population is growing at an alarming rate.  Due to this population growth, the demand for meat grows and with the demand for more meat, there will be more deforestation (trees provide oxygen) and more demand for water.  Ask yourself, why is there such a huge increase in pulminary (asthma/bronchitis) disease, heart disease, diabetes, cancers and obesity?  The introduction of processed foods and factory farming are definitely contributing factors.  People are dying because of what they eat.  Does this seem right to you?  Our elected officials are not doing enough to contribute to a more sustainable future for the people those who have elected them.  They pander to big corporations who only care about their profits.

We must take a more proactive approach to our health and our environment.  There are many people out there who have viable solutions to make our world more sustainable.  Isn’t it time to allow them to bring their initiative and ideas to the table?  Isn’t it time for REAL change and not the false identity of change our current leaders keep talking about?  Isn’t it time our governments stop spending money on war in favour of creating real positive change across the globe?

The earth can’t sustain the population growth and our demand for more meat.  People must assess what is more important, the need to eat meat or saving our planet from destruction.

THE TRUTH ABOUT MARIJUANA

During my teen years, I was surrounding by friends who smoked marijuana and drank excessive alcohol.  I have seen much more damage caused by those who drank alcohol than by those who smoked weed.

Let’s take a look at some  facts about alcohol:

  • Drunk driving causes approximately one-third of all traffic fatalities in the United States*
  • In 2007, alcohol-impaired driving was responsible in the deaths of nearly 13,000 Americans**
  • On average, someone in the U.S. is killed by a drunk driver every 40 minutes*
  • Nearly 75% of drunk drivers involved in fatal collisions are not wearing safety belts**
  • Approximately 75% of fatal crashes occurring between midnight and 3 a.m. involve alcohol***
  • The highest rates of drunk driving occur among drivers aged 21-24.  This age group makes up 35% of alcohol-impaired drivers involved in fatal collisions***
  • Men are about twice as likely as women to drive under the influence of alcohol and to be involved in a fatal collision**

facts about marijuana:

  • Marijuana is created from the dried, shredded flowers and leaves of the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa*
  • The international and scientific name for marijuana is cannabis.  However, the substance is most commonly called marijuana within the United States*
  • The first law in the American colonies regarding marijuana was a 1619 law that actually required farmers to grow the hemp plant.  Once harvested, hemp was useful for clothing, sails and rope*
  • During the temperance movement of the 1890’s, marijuana was commonly recommended as a substitute for alcohol.  The reason for this was that use of marijuana did not lead to domestic violence while alcohol abuse did*
  • Prior to its ban, hemp was a staple cash crop of the family farm in early America.  The first two drafts of the United States Declaration of Independence were written on paper made from hemp**
  • The Controlled Substances Act of 1970 made it illegal to possess, use, buy, sell, or cultivate marijuana in the United States***
  • Current supporters of medical marijuana believe the drug has significant medical value for patients who suffer from AIDS, glaucoma, cancer, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, and chronic pain.  Several studies have been published to support and document this belief****

I have experienced and used both alcohol and marijuana and have concluded that alcohol has had much more of a negative effect on me than marijuana.  I found that marijuana eased some anxiety issues and provided a more relaxed environment while alcohol caused me to become more aggressive and argumentative.

It has been documented that cannabis has relieved emotional and physical pain for people who suffer from alzheimers, anxiety, arthritis, cancer, Parkinsons, Multiple Sclerosis and AIDS.

The primary active ingredient in marijuana is THC (delta 9 tethydrocannabinol) – this is the chemical that produces marijuana’s mind-altering effects.  Hemp is a variety of cannabis that is grown for the fiber and seeds.  Hemp is a very hearty plant and grows very quickly in very diverse soil conditions.  Cultivation of hemp for industrial purposes has been done by many civilizations for over 12,000 years.

Still not satisfied regarding the benefits of hemp or cannabis, here are some amazing statements people have made:

With proper knowledge – individuals can make their own decisions in relation to whatever health issues they face.  Why must there only be one way?  We continue to hear the negative outcomes of chemotherapy and how other pharmaceutical drugs create life-altering dependencies or even death, why not have other more positive alternatives than what government and BIG PHARMA insists works?

Knowledge is power.  Don’t debunk something just because CNN tells you to.  Do the research, read the case studies, watch videos and do what you feel is necessary without the distractions of those who are only looking out for their bottom line.

How Do YOU Determine Happiness?

Do you determine your happiness by:

  • The amount of money you have.
  • Your social status in your community.
  • Your level of education.
  • Your job title.
  • The influence you have on others.
  • The amount of power you have.
  • Your personal possessions.

Please remember – All of the above does not matter without love.  Your true worth isn’t about the material things you possess, the power you yield, your education level, your social status, your job title or how much money you have – it’s about how much love and positive energy you can give to those who need it most.

Love given and love received is all the happiness anyone should ever need.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT LOVE

What is love?  We all have ideas about what love is and how we are supposed to give and receive it but have we really taken the time and thought about how we love?  Poems are written about it, artists sing songs about it, movie plot lines revolve around finding and losing love – everyone has an opinion about love but most importantly, we all have experience the positive and negative aspects of being in love.

Here is the definition of love according to The Concise Oxford Dictionary (Ninth Edition):

  •  An intense feeling of deep affection or fondness for a person or thing; great liking.
  • Sexual passion.
  • Sexual relations.
  • A beloved one; a familiar form of address regardless of affection.

We all know and understand that there are different types of love but the feelings associated with that love are very similar.  Those feelings stir emotions and find their way to the deepest crevices of our minds and our hearts.  Here are some powerful quotes surrounding love from people of all walks of life:

“The conclusion is always the same.  Love is the most powerful and still the most unknown energy of the world.” – Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

“Let us always meet each other with smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.” – Mother Teresa

“Keep love in your heart.  A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead.” – Oscar Wilde

“New Age values are conscious evolution, a non-sectarian society, a non-military culture, global sharing, healing the environment, sustainable economies, self-determination, social justice, economic empowerment of the poor, love, compassion in action, going beyond religious fundamentalism, going beyond nationalism-extreme nationalism, culture.” – Deepak Chopra

“Since love grows within you, so beauty grows.  For love is the beauty of the soul.” – Saint Augustine

“I love dogs.  They live in the moment and don’t care about anything except affection and food.  They’re loyal and happy.  Humans are just too damn complicated.” – David Duchovny

“Love is a trap.  When it appears, we see only its light, not its shadows.” – Paulo Coelho

“I love argument, I love debate.  I don’t expect anyone just to sit there and agree with me, that’s not their job.” – Margaret Thatcher

“The more I think about it, the more I realize there is nothing more artistic than to love others.” – Vincent Van Gogh

“A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave.” – Mahatma Gandhi

“Your ordinary acts of love and hope point to the extraordinary promise that every human life is of inestimable value.” – Desmond Tutu

“Who could refrain that had a heart to love and in that heart courage to make love known?” – William Shakespeare

“If in my youth I had realized that the sustaining splendour of beauty of with which I was in love would one day flood back into my heart, there to ignite a flame that would torture me without end, how gladly would I have put out the light in my eyes.” – Michelangelo

“Whatever you want to do, if you want to be great at it, you have to love it and be able to make sacrifices for it.” – Maya Angelou

“When I found somebody who I fell in love with, it made me feel different than I felt the rest of the day.  It was electrifying.  That’s what inspired the “Off to the Races” melodies.  That’s one of the times when you’re feeling electrified by someone else and they make you happy to be alive.” – Lana Del Rey

“To be brave is to love someone unconditionally, without expecting anything in return.  To just give.  That takes courage, because we don’t want to fall on our faces or leave ourselves open to hurt.” – Madonna

“The winds that sometimes take something we love, are the same that bring us something we learn to love. Therefore we should not cry about something that was taken from us, but, yes, love what we have been given. Because what is really ours is never gone forever.” – Bob Marley

Every one of us has their own idea or concept of what love is but, there is no denying that we all feel the same way in terms of how the power of love affects us.  The quotes above are perfect examples of how love differs in intensity based on what or who you are loving.

LET LOVE REIGN

There are many musicians who have made an impact in pop culture.  Artists that were game changers in their respective genres like – Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Billie Holiday, The Supremes, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Mary J. Blige and Sade.  Today, not many artists have the same impact but have made stood considering today’s music is very generic.  In an era where hip/hop and rap rules, there have been leaders and followers.  Some of the artists making an impact today include – Rihanna, Beyoncé, Eminem, Lady Gaga and Drake.  But what of those artists that somehow fly under the radar and that have contributed brilliant music?  Such artists like – Faithless, Joi Cardwell, Billie Ray Martin, Roisin Murphy, The Knife, Deee-Lite, Oh Land, Robyn, Royksopp and Bjork.

Kristine Weitz – known as Kristine W, has been an active artist – mainly in the dance/club scene in North America.  Her first commercially released single, “Feel What You Want” was a success in Europe and became her first of 8 consecutive Billboard Club Play #1 hits.  Saying this, let’s take a look at her body of work.  As mentioned, Kristine’s first number one hit on a Billboard Chart, was “Feel What You Want”.  Since then, Kristine W has tallied 16 number one singles on Billboards Club Play Chart.  As of April 2015, Kristine W is currently in the top 5 artists with most number one’s on this chart.  Here is the current ranking of most number 1’s on Billboard’s Club Play

  1. Madonna (44)
  2. Beyoncé and Rihanna (22)
  3. Janet Jackson (19)
  4. Mariah Carey and Donna Summer (17)
  5. Kristine W and Jennifer Lopez (16)

For an artist who hasn’t had much airplay on commercial/pop radio, it’s pretty amazing to be in a ranking with such high-profile artist such as Beyoncé, Rihanna and the Queen of Pop – Madonna.  As a matter of fact, Kristine W was named Billboard’s # 3 artist of the 2000’s only behind Beyoncé and Madonna.

In my opinion, Kristine W, has released one of the best pop/dance/electronic albums – Land of the Living.  This album is a perfect amalgamation of pop/jazz/club and electronic music.  Land of the Living is a powerful and passionate album that comes from the heart and a place of love.  It’s an album that has a message about perseverance, determination and becoming independent.  Land of the Living reinforces that the dance community is not only about beats, fun and drugs but that it cares about social issues and is as legitimate as the other genres in pop culture.

Here is a bit of background surrounding Kristine W’s releases:

  • She has released 8 full-length albums:  Perfect Beat (1986, re-released in 1994), Land of the Living (1996), Stronger (2000), Fly Again (2003), The Power of Music (2009), Straight Up With A Twist (2010), New and Number Ones (2012), New and Number Ones Club Hits Part One (2013), New and Number Ones Club Hits Part Two (2014).
  • Has officially released 20 singles.
  • All of her commercially released singles were # 1 singles on the Billboard Club Play Chart except, “I’ll Be Your Light” (2), “So Close To Me” (2), “Everything That I Got” (4) and “Love Come Home” (4).  “Love Come Home” war originally released in 1994 and did not chart.
  • Her most successful charted single was, “One More Try” which hit Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart and peaked at # 78.
  • Her album “Straight Up With A Twist” includes jazz and chill out reinterpretations of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven”, Donna Summer’s “On The Radio” and Eagles “Take It To The Limit”.  It also includes reinterpretations of her own classic hits, “Wonder of It All”, “Stronger”, “Some Lovin”, and “Feel What You Want”.

I have had the opportunity of seeing Kristine W each time she has come to the Toronto, Ontario Canada region and even met her on several occasions.  She really does give everything she’s got when performing and greeting her fans.  I am inspired of how hard she works to get her music out to her fans especially without the backing of a major record label.

I continue to have much of her music on repeat on my phone, computer, home stereo and record player!  Yes, I revisit and play vinyl as often as I can – the music is so crisp and clear on vinyl.  It also provides that comforting ‘old school’ feeling of when the purchase of music was just as exciting as listening to it.  I have many favorite singles from all of her albums.  It’s hard to pick one song that is the best but, there is always one song I always go back to when I need motivation, inspiration and a reminder that LOVE can conquer anything.  That song is “Let Love Reign”.  Hope it inspires you as much as it inspired me.  Here are the lyrics, YouTube audio follows:

Let Love Reign

There’s a kingdom that lives
Maybe it’s only in my mind
Where love reigns all the time
Do you believe? I still believe

Our brother’s sleeping all alone in the park
His head is resting on a pillow of hope
Then he says dance for me, he gives me smiles for free
He trades a joke for mine and the world is fine

And we let love reign
We reach out, don’t be afraid
Everything you do
It will be coming back to you
Let love reign

A rich man’s sitting on his velvet couch
His kingdom rains until he’s drowned in my dreams
And then he says sing for me, give me your song for free
I’d trade his soul for mine if I could only make him kind

And he would let love reign
We reach out, don’t be afraid
Everything you do
It’s coming back to you

There’s a kingdom of kindness where love is
And a rainbow will come with the rain’s kiss
And love remains when love reigns

Let love reign
We reach out, don’t be afraid
And everything you do
It will be coming back to you

‘Cause only love reigns
With my love reigns
Everything you do
Is coming back to you

I do believe that love remains
I do believe that love reigns
I do believe that love remains
I do believe that love reigns

I do believe that love remains
I do believe that love reigns
I do believe that love remains
I do believe that love reigns

I do believe
I do believe
I do believe
Let our love reign

DO YOU BELIEVE IN FATE?

Lately, I don’t really take much time to assess why certain things have happened in my life.  I just assume that whatever happens is what is meant to happen.  I don’t over analyze, I don’t take too much time to question or debate why things have/have not happened.  Instead of asking myself, “Why didn’t I get that job?” or “Why is this person treating me this way?” – I make the determination that these events are supposed to happen as they are because I am supposed to get a better job or I was supposed to learn something about that person.  Sure we can do things in order to achieve certain results but there are many things that we don’t have control over.

I remember an incident in which my spouse’s friend was slightly unhappy in her job.  I suggested that she take the experience she received from her current job and apply for a position where I worked.  She not only got the job – her life changed.  She met someone she fell in love with, they got married and had two beautiful children.  According to many of her Facebook posts, she seems to be happy and is enjoying her life.  Where we meant to connect so that these events could take place in her life?

It is only normal to ask ourselves, “What if I hadn’t decided to move here?” or “I wonder what would my life have been like if I didn’t meet (insert name here)?”  These questions remind me of a movie called, Sliding Doors, starring Gwenyth Paltrow.  The movie takes a look at a life of a woman in two different situations.  She is rushing to make a train and the first scenario is how her life turned out by catching the train.  The second scenario is a look at her life had she not caught that same train.  It was an entertaining movie that had the same outcome – things are supposed to happen as they should.

When we do look back at our lives, we shouldn’t look back with regret.  The past should be looked at as learning experiences that have made us the people we are today.  Live in the current moment and don’t stress too much about the ‘what if’s’ or ‘I should have…’  If we are present and fully aware of the now, we will not miss anything.  We should also not spend too much time thinking of the future – you can’t determine what will happen tomorrow, next week or a year from now so why bother worrying about it?

By being aware of the now – the things that are happening to you in real-time, you will be in a much better capacity to deal with anything that happens.  Allow yourself to do the things that you want to do now.  If you apply on a job, do your best and thank the universe for the opportunity – if the job is supposed to be yours, it will happen.  If you are debating whether you should move to a different part of your town, city or another part of the world – trust in the universe (or fate) to provide you with your solution.  Things happen as they should.  If you are struggling too much with a certain situation, take a deep breath, send your inquiries into the universe, remove yourself from the stressful issue and trust that fate will take care of the rest.  By trusting in yourself and in the universe or higher power – you allow yourself to connect to source, the power of creation and the never-ending force of love.  Trust in that love and all will be well in your world.
