How would you feel if your home was destroyed and your loved ones killed?  That is precisely what is happening in this region of the world, more specifically, Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Virunga National Park is Africa’s oldest park.  It borders Uganda and Rwanda and is the continent’s most biologically diverse protected area.  It covers 7800 kilometers (3000 square miles) and includes forests, savannas, lava plains, swamps, erosion valleys, active volcanoes, and glaciated peaks of the Rwenzori mountains.

The park is composed of three sectors:

  1. The northern sector – Rwenzori mountains that border Uganda.
  2. Lake Edward – The Isasha river valley and the Rwindi plains are the dominant geographical features that define the parks central sector.
  3. The southern sector – Best known for the mountain gorilla’s that live on the flanks on the dormant Mikeno volcano.

Why should you care?  The park is in another continent and we are nowhere near the political conflicts that are happening there.  Just because the conflict is happening elsewhere doesn’t mean that we are not obligated to do whatever we can to help.  We are all citizens of this planet and it is in our best interest to speak out against human, environment and animal atrocities.

Our planet continues to be raped for its natural resources.  Big businesses are buying governments all over the globe for those limited natural resources.  Wars are waged, animal and human lives are lost all at the expense to earn a big corporation more money.  This is absolutely wrong and must end.

When I talk to people about environmental disasters, the inhumane treatment of animals and human rights violations they turn a blind eye and figure that there is nothing they can do.  They are wrong.  All they have to do is take interest and act – and this can be done right from home.  First, educate yourself about the issue then decide what your plan of action is.  I make monetary donations when I can but mainly share information via social media as I am now.

So, what can you do about helping Virunga National Park?  Here are two suggestions:

Virunga National Park is pivotal in protecting the few remaining mountain gorilla’s.  They also help protect the elephants in this region.  Virunga’s elephants drastically reduced in numbers due to poachers from 3000 to approximately 400.  In the last year – the Mabenga herd was hit particularly hard – less than 100 remain and are in grave danger of being wiped out entirely.

The park supports local villages and citizens.  It supports the families of rangers that have been lost due to the conflict and fighting in the region.  How can we not assist people who have such passion to protect a national treasure and all its inhabitants, with their lives?  It is our duty and it is our right. 

It’s time that we start a revolution of love and a revolution for the planet and our environment.  We need to give a clear message to those who wish to see our planet destroyed because of their love of money.  We need to rise and form a coalition to protect the planet from further destruction.  Together, with strength, we can make the difference that is needed.

Today, many people are turning to non-traditional medicine as a way to treat ailments and disease such as, alternative and natural health.  Many individuals are refusing treatments composed of harmful toxins that may have serious side effects and cause more harm than good. 

Over-the-counter drugs are taken for everything from colds, allergies and headaches to back aches, ear aches and tooth aches.  Most of these drugs are ineffective and short-term relief and may even prolong the aches/pains you are trying to treat.

Our planet has provided herbs and spices that have helped alleviate and treat common ailments for centuries.  Taking a more holistic approach to health has great benefits.  Personally, I prefer trying alternative and natural health remedies to treat my ailments before I go to modern medicine.

I recently read an article in the February 2015 issue of Vitality Magazine entitled, Old World Cures for Late Winter Ailments.  I thought I would share some of my favorites with you.

Homemade Herbal Cough Syrup

Add 3 cups fresh mixed herbs or 1/2 cup of dried herbs into 2 cups of water.  Herbs to choose from are sage, thyme, rosemary, parsley, lavender, oregano, borage and mint.  You can also add dried plantain leaf, crushed dried clover blossom, chamomile flowers, dried raspberry leaves, ground wild ginger rhizomes or fresh grated or dried ginger root to the herb measure. 

Bring mixture to a boil, simmer about 20 minutes or until reduced to half.  Remove from heat, cover and steep until cold.  Strain liquid into a clean pan.  Put back on stove and add 1 cup of creamed clover honey.  Heat until blended.  Cool.  Pour into sterilized bottle and cap.  Take 1 tsp as needed.  Store the cough syrup in a cool place and it will save indefinitely.

Chamomile Tea for Aiding Digestion and Warding off Heartburn

This fragrant tea is reputed to aid digestion and should be served before mealtime.  Put 3 Tbsp fresh chamomile flowers or 1 Tbsp dried flowers into a warmed teapot, cover with boiling water and steep for 5 minutes.  Strain into a teacup.  It also alleviates mild nausea.  Good for pregnant women experiencing morning sickness, seasickness in travellers.

2 Tbsp fresh sage leaf or 1 tsp of dried plant in a heated teapot and cover with 1 cup of boiling water.  Steep 5 minutes.  Add lemon if using as treatment for sore throat.  Sweeten with honey if you wish.

***In China, sage tea is recommended for many ailments including bad nerves, ulcers, liver, kidney troubles and to reduce fevers***

Thyme Tea for Cough and Bronchitis, and Oregano Tea For Sinus

Thyme makes a comforting cup of tea that is useful for breaking up coughs associated with bronchitis.  Steep 2 Tbsp fresh plant or 1 tsp dried plant per cup of boiling water for 15 minutes.  Oregano tea is a good treatment for sinus congestion – made the same way as the thyme tea.  A blend of the two herbs makes a potent tea for fighting any cold or influenza virus.


This tea is noted as being a good cleanser for the intestines and helps prevent bloating from overindulgence in rich foods.  To make the tea from fresh plant, simply put a handful fo fresh, picked, washed flowers in the teapot, cover with boiling water and steep for 5 minutes.  To make it out of dried plant, use about 2 Tbsp dried flowers per cup of water.  The tea can be sweetened with honey and served hot to ward off cold and flu in winter, or served cold with a bit of lemon to cool down the body in summertime.

Lavender Tea for Depression, Insomnia, Headaches

Nothing is more uplifting than catching a whiff of lavender in the summer breeze.  The good news is, you can grow lavender in your indoor herb garden all year round to fill your room with the calming scent.  Of course, you can also dry the excess bounty from your summer herb patch to use as a picker-upper whenever you’re feeling down and out, can’t sleep, or are suffering from headaches caused by stress.  To make lavender tea, use 2 Tbsp fresh lavender or 1 tsp dried plant per cup of boiling water.  Steep 15 minutes.  For headache, inhale the steam before drinking the tea.  To cure insomnia, drink the tea while soaking in a bath to which you’ve added a good handful of dried plant for a calming, relaxing scent before going to bed.

We all know and understand that food plays a very important role in how you feel.   We need to feed our bodies food that will provide proper nutrients and minerals so that we can have energy throughout the day and function at optimal health levels.  Our bodies will let us know what foods makes us feel good or make us feel bad. 


A diet that consists of sugary, processed, meat and unnatural foods can increase cancer rates, diabetes, heart disease and stroke because of the artificial flavours and colours, GMO’s (genetically modified organisms), MSG (monosodium glutamate), trans fat, antibiotics and hormones.  Here are some foods that are consumed in large quantities and why they are bad for your body and overall health:


  • Doesn’t provide the calcium our bones require
  • Increases risk of fractures
  • Mother’s milk is good for babies i.e., human to human, cow to calf, goat to goat, etc. once weaned off milk, animals and humans never need milk again.



  • Contain artificial preservatives which are very toxic to the body
  • Most meat today, contains antibiotics and hormones
  • Many animals are raised on foods that are unnatural to their diet and are fed GMO’s
  • Ingesting inhumane meat is unhealthy for the body and soul (the trauma and violence an animal goes through – all that negative energy is then consumed and lives within those who eat it)


Processed Foods (mostly boxed and packaged for longer shelf life)

  • Can be high in added sugars, low in fiber and whole grains, processed with sodium, high in fat or include trans fat and lots of saturated fat

Soft Drink/soda/pop/colas 

  • Too much sugar
  • No nutritional value
  • Could cause early menstruation in young girls


Eating a plant-based diet consisting of 80% fresh, raw and organic produce is vital for our bodies to receive proper minerals and nutrients.  Eating a plant-based diet, consisting of more vegetables than fruit is beneficial for the following reasons:

  • More energy and less fatigued
  • Lower cholesterol
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Lower risk of cancer
  • Better blood sugar 

You can provide the body all the proper nutrients, vitamins and minerals on a plant-based diet that includes whole grains, seeds and nuts.  Taking a proactive approach to our diet is a great way to prevent illness and maintain a healthy body.

Eating a vegetarian and vegan diet is not only a health benefit to you, it is an excellent way to be environmentally conscious and save hundreds of animals from being slaughtered/murdered.

We are told that in order to be successful we must always reach for the top.  I say forget that – you do not have to be “on top” to be successful in life.  Does being on top mean that you have fulfilled all that you need to and that you will be happy and content?  I believe that the statement of ‘Reach For The Top’ should be replaced with, ‘Reach For Your Passion’.

What is the difference between – REACH FOR THE TOP versus REACH FOR YOUR PASSION?  The main difference is that you are not putting pressure on yourself when you work towards the goals that you are passionate about.  When you are passionate about what you do in life, whether that is working in a nursery, a retirement home or as a teacher, you will always be successful.

Society puts so much emphasis that having financial freedom means that you have become successful but, as we know, money doesn’t buy health, it doesn’t buy compassion or happiness and it certainly doesn’t buy love.  Success, for me, can be measured in the goodness that you have in your heart and how much of that goodness you can give back into our society.  That is success.  Let others witness your passion and be a beacon of change.  So, don’t reach for the top – reach for what you are passionate about and when you find that passion, give back to the world and let your positive energy flow into the universe.

Why wait for others to make you happy?  People are so adamant in ensuring that you know when others have made them upset or angry but, not many of us want to share those moments that have made us really happy.  I find that people are so much more interested in hearing about that things that have shock value or that make them feel like they  are relaying pertinent information.  Gossip and stories that have shock value have no value because everyone already knows those stories.  So, why not start a new trend and share stories that make you feel good and make others feel good?

So, where do you get these ‘feel good’ stories?  Instead of searching for them on the internet, which I would recommend, why not create them yourself by being the instrument that is spreading the happiness.  Here are some things that you can do to bring a smile and happiness into your life and the lives of others:

  • Give a homeless person $20 or take them into a restaurant and buy them a meal.
  • Contact a local animal shelter and ask them if they need one of your old computers, printers, televisions, old furniture, or anything else and donate it to them.
  • Contact a local women`s shelter and do the same – offer them women`s clothing, baby clothes, etc.
  • The above 2 points apply to any type of not-for-profit, they are always looking for donations.
  • If you have any extra money – donate it to help the environment or other not-for-profits that create positive change in the world, great organizations like; Peta, Greenpeace, WWF, 350.org, ACT, etc.
  • Volunteer and share your volunteering experience.
  • Hand out random `thank you`cards to strangers with a message that they are appreciated and loved.

I have done most of the things listed above – which brought me so much joy and pleasure.  Why should I not share that experience and feeling with others so that they can experience the same things?

My spouse shared a story with me that swelled my heart and made me so happy.  This reinforced how much kindness and generosity he has in his heart:

He was having a cup of coffee in the Second Cup (a local coffee house) when a girl came in and was enthusiastically commenting on a piece of cake that was in one of their displays.  She asked the employee how much it was and realized it was too much for her.  She indicated that the cake was worth it but that she could not buy it.  She said thanks and was about to leave.  Jason approached her and asked if it was okay if could buy the piece of cake for her.  She hesitated, so he Jason asked the employee for the cake and bought it for this stranger.  The young lady was so appreciative and grateful that she said because of Jason’s kindness, she would return the favour to someone else when she was able.

These are the stories that should inspire us to continue to initiate random acts of kindness.  They provide us with feelings of joy, happiness and fill your heart with love.  Forget celebrity gossip or news of current world events.  Let the stories of positivity and joy contaminant the hearts of everyone you touch.  Let these stories lead you to whatever happiness and fulfilment you are seeking.

I recently purchased a book that has some excellent and easy to read scientific facts.  The book is entitled, ‘Bite-Size Science Everything You Need To Know About Science in Small, Easily Digestible Portions’ written by Robert Dinwiddie.  Here are just some of the facts:


The three main causes greenhouse gases:  Carbon dioxide (Co2) makes up about 74 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions that are caused by human activity, methane about 16 percent, and nitrous oxide about 9 percent,  below are the relative contributions of different human activities to emissions of these three greenhouse gases.

Sources of Greenhouse Gases

  • 12% Road transport
  • 2%   Aviation
  • 2%   Other transportation
  • 28% Homes and offices
  • 31% Industry
  • 17% Deforestation and other changes in land use
  • 8%  Fossil fuel production, mining, and distribution

Nitrous Oxide Emissions

  • 6%   Industry
  • 26% Deforestation and other changes in land use
  • 62% Agricultural activities and by-products
  • 2%   Waste disposal and treatment
  • 4%   Other

Methane Emissions

  • 5%    Homes and offices
  • 7%    Deforestation and other changes in land use

Where have the extra carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases that have entered the atmosphere over the past 100 years come from?  Natural emissions of CO2, such as those produced by volcanic eruptions, are undoubtedly greater than those produced by human activity, but over periods longer than a few years CO2 emissions from these natural sources had been closely balanced by the absorption of the gas by natural “sinks” such as the oceans and green plants.  Climate scientists are therefore confident that most of the measured CO2 rise has come from the burning of fossil fuels-coal, crude oil, and natural gas-used to provide energy for transport and to generate electrical power and heating for industry, homes, and offices.  Much of the rest of the extra CO2 in the atmosphere has come from deforestation-the clearing of forests and the burning of wood.  This releases carbon that was previously “locked up” in trees in the form of cellulose or other carbon-containing chemicals.  Some additional CO2 emissions come from the mining, production, and distribution of fossil fuels.

If we continue to demand so much of our planet and continue to deplete our natural resources by deforestation, drilling and relying on fossil fuels, what will our future planet look like?  Isn’t it time we really think about preserving our rivers, lakes, oceans and forests and move towards a more sustainable and renewable energy sources?


The resting body uses energy at the same rate as a standard 100-watt lightbulb.

Thinking uses a lot of energy – the brain consumes one-fifth of all the energy used by a body at rest.

The recommended daily limit of salt is 6 grams (1/2 oz) yet some ready-made meals contain three times this amount.

If a food label lists “sodium” instead of “salt,” multiply the amount of sodium by 2.5 to get the quantity of salt.

Food is fuel.  Like any machine, the human body needs fuel for energy – to move around, keep warm, and to power the heartbeat, breathing, digestion, and even thinking.  But food is more than fuel.  It also supplies nutrients and raw minerals for growth, maintaining and repairing body tissues, and making sure all internal processes work smoothly.  So what you eat is as important as how much.  This leads to the idea of the food pyramid.  It shows foods we should consume in large amounts, those to limit, and those to avoid.  A “balanced diet” means eating the correct amounts, in proportion, of a range of dietary components.  

Carbohydrates provide energy.  They are found in starchy foods like grains, breads, pasta, and potatoes.  Proteins supply amino acids for tissue growth, maintenance, and repair.  They are mainly found in meat, fish, dairy produce, and legumes.  Fats and oils are needed for body tissues like nerves, but only in small amounts.  Plant oils are healthiest.  Vitamins and minerals are required for hundreds of internal processes; among the best sources are cereals and cereal products, and fresh fruits and vegetables, all of which also supply dietary fiber.  Foods of animal origin also supply many vitamins and minerals.  Last and far from least is water – in general at least two to three quarts (or litres) should be drunk a day.


  • The bulk of your intake should be cereal products such as whole grain bread, vegetables, and fruits.  These provide energy, vitamins and minerals, and dietary fiber.
  • Put a limit on foods high in fats, oils, and sugars, such as chocolate.  They are “empty calories” with too much energy and few other nutrients.
  • Alcoholic drinks provide calories (energy) from their alcohol and carbohydrate content, but little or no other nutrients.  High consumption of alcoholic drinks is a frequent contributor to weight gain.
  • Too many sugary foods such as cookies and cakes give a “rush” of energy that soon fades.  The body prefers the slow release, complex carbohydrates found in whole grains, potatoes, and other starchy vegetables.
  • Animal fats and oils in red meats, processed meats such as salmis and burgers, fried foods, and cheeses are linked to high cholesterol, obesity and heart disease.

So it is true that  we are what we eat and that our bodies should be treated like temples.  Treat your body with kindness, love and respect and feed it a mostly plant-based diet and it will give you vitality, happiness and health.

Valentine’s Day; also known as, Saint Valentine’s Day or Feast of Saint.  Do people even know the origin of this day?  Whether you celebrate it for the liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus or for the martyrdom tales that were invented for various Valentines that belonged to February 14.  Whatever the reason, this day is all about LOVE.  By why one day?  Why not everyday?

It seems that the celebration of Valentine’s Day is about chocolates, jewellery, flowers and Hallmark cards.  Don’t get me wrong, it is amazing and wonderful to show your significant other how much you love them….but shouldn’t that be an everyday thing?  The commercial aspect of this day seems pointless and even heartless, which is the last thing you want on a day that is devoted to celebrating love.

Today, as well as showing my significant other how I love him, I want to spread love and positivity into the world.  I want people to know that love is everywhere…all you need to do is look and be receptive to it.

Many believe me to be very harsh against people who have Christian beliefs and values.  I don’t.  What I am against is what some religions teach.

Many of us have been told that God is always watching and that we should fear him.  Why fear a God that apparently loves and ALL of His children?  Is God a voyeur?  If he is always watching, how come he hasn’t interfered in helping the homeless or punishing the greedy?  Many people have claimed that God caused many of the environmental catastrophe’s today because of gay marriage.  To them, I say:  “Why is God only interested in causing devastation in order to drive YOUR point?” These “rule’s” weren’t God’s rules, they were the rules of men who felt uncomfortable or threatened by things they didn’t understand or fear.

In my world, women can practice religion, they can vote, they can decide not to be with their spouses without any recourse of death, they can drive cars, they can voice their opinions if they disagree with their spouses and they can do whatever they want with their bodies without feeling shamed or ridiculed.

In my world, people who are struggling to buy food, eat healthy, get an education and have access to health care should not be told that it is their own fault they are in this predicament.  They should be supported and given a chance to create a better life for themselves and their children.

In my world, people should not be denied to love someone of the same-sex.  Shouldn’t we be encouraging love to flourish and grow so that society can flourish and grow.

In my world, wars would not be a means of showing my disagreement with policies of another country.  I would engage in conversation and dialogue not wave my military might around in order to instil my own countries beliefs.

So what has religion taught me?  It has taught me that there are many people who are puppets and who are afraid to ask questions.  Religion has taught me that there are many followers.  Religion has taught me that there are those who use it to secure their place in the world through politics.  Religion has taught me that you only win through violence and obedience.  Religion has taught me that there is much hate in the world.  Religion has taught me that there is much ignorance in the world.  Religion has taught me that there is much divide and separation in the world.  Where is the love?  Where is the compassion?  Where is the tolerance?

All of the above sounds very anti-love and anti-religion, doesn’t it?  To that I say, “Why is it that what you believe outweigh what I believe?”  I may not believe in what is written in a ‘holy book’.  I certainly do not believe what religious doctrine has preached as the word of whatever God or prophet or idol others believe in but this doesn’t make me any better than those who believe this.

What if there was a religion that made no judgements on others?  It’s okay to be a woman and have a voice.  It’s okay to help others.  It’s okay to be different.  It’s okay that you have a tattoo.  It’s okay that you are Muslim, Jewish, Catholic, Christian, Rastafarian, pagan, atheist or whatever.  What is not okay is to judge, oppress, divide, conquer and hate.

So I ask, which world would you rather live in?  A world that dictates everything you should believe or a world that allows you to ask questions and not be a follower?

Have you ever thought about how you treat yourself on a daily basis?  Have you took notice of how you react to other people and certain situations?

I try to take notice of everything I say and do to myself or to others because ultimately, what you do or say affects every aspect of your physical and emotional state.

Why should we get angry and irritated about getting stuck in traffic?  It is frustrating but, you don’t know the reason for the jam.  If the traffic jam is a result of someone dying in this accident, wouldn’t that make the complaining pointless and irrelevant?  Wouldn’t your mood instantly change from anger to gratitude that you are alive and empathy for the friends and family of the person who died?

Why hang on to thoughts of anger, sadness and anxiety?  These thoughts will only allow the low-energy feelings to stay with you.  Next time you feel this way – try to acknowledge these feelings and think about the events that may have brought on these feelings.  Could it be an inter-action you had with a family member, co-worker, friend or spouse?  Could it be something you ate?  Could it being medication or recreational drugs and alcohol?  Recognizing what brought on these low-level energy feelings is the first step in moving towards creating postive change and positive feelings.

Motivate yourself by feeding your body and mind the things that promote positive energy.  If someone in your circle of friends is creating “static” in your life and becomes a beacon of negativity – remove yourself from that circle until the situation changes.  This is relative to family members as well – if a family member is sucking the positive energy out of you and only spews negativity, maybe it’s time to stay away from them for a while.

If low-level feelings are brought on by your job, maybe it’s time to think about changing careers.  Think about something you are passionate about and make that your job.  If you eat a lot of fast-food, carbonated soft drinks, milk or other processed foods and have many low-energy thoughts, maybe it’s time to incorporate more organic and plant-based foods into your diet.  Even the lack of exercise can bring on low-level energy feelings….change this by going jogging, doing yoga, weight-lifting, cycling and something as simple as going for a walk in the park.  

You will be surprised how much clarity, good emotional and physical health you can receive by incorporating a plant-based diet and exercise program into your life.  Don’t you deserve to have optimal emotional and physical health.  Should you not have a more holistic and proactive approach to your well-being as opposed to  medicating it with pharmaceutical drugs or unhealthy food?

Don’t be too judgemental about what you do.  Approach this part of life as an educational process.  You have learned all your current habits and you can certainly un-learn them.  Don’t be too hard on yourself if you fail at something or you don’t reach a goal you set for yourself – just pick yourself up and move forward.  Acknowledge your low-level feelings with love and thank the universe for allowing you to address them.

Isn’t it time to be kind to yourself?  By being kind to yourself, you ensure that you are kind to others.

Television, radio, newspapers and magazines are so pre-occupied with reporting stories of hate, violence, gossip and negativity.  I understand the need to inform the general public of issues happening around the world but to do so 24 hours a day and 7 days a week – it’s too much!  Also – without outlets reporting unbiased and newsworthy stories, we would be unable to act to ensure a positive outcome is achieved.

Today…I want to focus on LOVE in music.  There have been so many songs written about love – most are usually about heartbreak due to relationships ending.  There are also many songs that celebrate the positivity of love and how love can make everyone feel great….here are some examples via song lyrics:
