In the United States – BLACK FRIDAY was associated with the financial crisis of 1869.  Today it is to signify the start of the Christmas holiday shopping season and for most businesses, this translates to the most profitable time of year for them.

BLACK FRIDAY – in my opinion, is when people become the most selfish and ungrateful (especially right after a holiday where we are to give thanks and appreciation for what we have).  Most people follow whatever trend is happening around them.  Television, radio, newspapers, magazines and flyers advertise all their sales and how they will open early (usually the night before) in order for the consumers to take advantage of these sales.  How much can people consume?  Do you really need all that these stores advertise and is facing potential violence and death even worth it?

I really don’t understand our society – in a world were millions of children are dying of hunger, so many American’s are homeless and in need, we have soldiers fighting wars that have no real significance, universal health care isn’t becoming the reality that President Obama wanted and the education system seems to be serving only those who have money.  But what is more important than all these things?  Black Friday and the Christmas shopping season.  It seems to me Canada and The United States of America have their priorities backwards.  People will not be able to go shopping without a planet to shop on.  Our environment is at a critical stage – worse than ever before and anticipated.  Many people are without stable jobs – and yet, people go out blindly and selfishly to shop and increase their debt level to appease BIG CORPORATIONS and BIG BANKS.

Here are some videos of how carried away people become to shop for things they don’t really need – things that will eventually end up in a landfill or polluting our planet:

Do you really want to be a part of the zombie nation above that is catering to corporations who pay their employees minimum wage, break human rights laws, allow child labour and horrible working conditions.  Do you want to make the shareholders and company CEO’s richer while their employee’s struggle?  Think about what you are supporting.  Support something that is meaningful and will make you feel good about yourself and promote positive energy into the world.  Issues such as these:

It’s time that we think about our priorities and help our brothers and sisters instead of being brainwashed and told that you need to buy this, you need to watch this, you need to do this…..when all we need to do is open our eyes to compassion and love and spread positive energy into the world.  What will you do?

Together, we can make the world a more positive one!

Here are some clips to help and educate you on veganism:

Great resources for starting a vegetarian and vegan lifestyle:

PETA – How to go vegan:

VEGAN SOCIETY – great resource with information and recipes on how to start a vegan lifestyle:

LIVING GREEN MAG – veganism and the environmental impacts:

Becoming vegan is a lifestyle choice – For me, it became hard to differentiate the difference between a domesticated animal versus all other animals.  It became difficult to eat a burger and not be fully aware that it was a living, breathing soul before it ended up as food on my plate.  The decision was clear – no more animals.  People continue to ask what I eat and are perplexed that I don’t eat, wear or purchase any products that were made on the suffering of any animals.  I drink vegan wine (Yellow Tale is my favourite – Australian Shiraz), I eat desserts, pizza’s, lasagna, burgers, fries…..but they are all made with plant-based ingredients.  Here are some of the dishes I have made:

TOFU “Egg” Salad Sandwich

Tofu Egg Salad Sandwich (9)

Mixed bean salad with tofurkey Italian “sausage”

Mixed Bean Salad with Tofurkey Italian Sausage

Meatless scallopine, mixed bean salad, and whole grain rice

PC meatless Scallopine with Seasoned Rice and Mixed bean and Vegetable Salad (8)

Breakfast jambalaya – seasoned tofu, vegetables and home fries

Rob's Breakfast Veggie Jambalaya

Vegan “chicken breast”, roasted potatoes and sautéed brocoli

Meatless Chicken Breast with Roasted Potatoes and Broccoli

We are only limited if we choose to be.  If you were told that eating a vegan lifestyle would promote a healthy mind and body, save countless animals from genocide/murder and help sustain our environment, wouldn’t you at least try?  We have become so conditioned to believe certain things.  These beliefs have helped corporations and governments make billions of dollars.  Isn’t it time you think for yourself and open your mind to the benefits that so many people are talking about?  Imagine cutting your prescription medications, having more energy, clearer skin, clearer thoughts, and healthier body.  Becoming vegetarian/vegan isn’t as hard as people claim it to be – that really is another myth that the meat and dairy industry would like you to believe.

I am not condemning anyone who chooses to eat meat – I know that there are many meat eaters that are loving and caring individuals.  One day – my hope is that they have the same awareness as I do…..if you love animals so much and have compassion for them – why continue to eat them?

Together, we can make the world a more positive one!

Every time I think of religion, my thoughts and visions are filled with violence, fear, anxiety, exclusiveness, and mythology.  I was raised Catholic, studied to become Jehovah’s Witnesses (my parents decided to try a new religious view), and went to a High School that had a mostly non-practicing Jewish student body.  I haven’t really had a big interest in religious studies – I only knew what my parents knew of religion and what I studied as a Jehovah’s Witness.   If I didn’t practice religion enough and don’t identify with any organized religion, is it fair of me to criticize those that do?  Before I answer that, let me tell you what I do know about religion and my personal accounts in dealing with those that have attempted to convert me into their following.

I was taught to have a fear for God and to ensure you follow God’s rules otherwise, I would end up in Hell.  Think about that for a moment – ‘Instill the fear of God’ into people.  Shouldn’t a God encompass values that He would like to see in His flock like love, compassion, empathy and patience?  Shouldn’t God be proud of His people’s desire to seek out the truth and to ask questions if they don’t understand or believe something to be true?  Well I had many questions – questions that never have been answered.  I have dealt with religious people who condemn me because of my homosexuality – as God made me.  I have been involved in endless debate about my sin being a much bigger sin than all others (again referring to my homosexuality).  I see so much hypocrisy in what I call the ‘celebrities of religion’ pandering to a congregation that funds their lavish lifestyle’s all in the name of religion and God (Jim Baker, Joel Olsteen, Pat Robertson, Rick Warren, Billy Graham, Howard and Roberta Ahmanson, David Barton, Benny Hinn).  I have read and seen movies based on the wars brought on in the name of religion.  I have been outraged at how many religious institutions protect criminals who are known sexual offenders, rapists and pedophiles and allow this behaviour to continue.

Religion is mythology to me – I can’t distinguish the difference between the stories I have read relating to Greek mythology versus the stories that are noted in The Bible.  Is it no wonder that Costco was recently in the news for placing The Bible in their ‘fiction’ section of books?  The stories I read in the bible were great – they seemed to fill people with hope and to allow people to come together for the greater good of humanity.  There were also those stories that ensured people were obedient and followed God’s laws, scary stories such as;  the story of Abraham and his devotion to God (God asked Abraham to show his devotion by asking him to call his son), the story of Noah’s Ark and Moses and the ten commandments.  All great stories, but very hard to treat them as non-fiction.

Here are some things I have questioned:

  • If Adam and Eve were the first, and they had two sons (Cain and Abel), how was it possible for the world to become populated?  The only sense I could make of this is that Cain and Abel were not Adam and Eve’s only children.
  • How was it possible for Noah to retrieve a male and female of every living animal on the planet to save them from extinction during the great flood.  Was he able to get sea creatures, insects, amphibians etc.?
  • If all was perfect in the Garden of Eden and as God wanted, why would God allow Satan to entice Eve?  Why Eve?  Where was Adam when Satan lured Eve with the forbidden fruit?
  • Why did God create a garden that included ‘forbidden fruit’?

Here are some Bible passages and versus that further convince me that the Bible was written by man as a means to control what they did not understand and feared:

Leviticus 11:  7 -8

***In reference to eating pork***

And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be cloven footed, yet he cheweth not the cud;  he is unclean to you.

Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch;  they are unclean to you.

As an animal activist and practicing vegan, this is great for the pig but, somewhere during history – Christians love for bacon, ham and pork sausages became less important than what was written in the bible.  Will pork-eating Christians not be allowed in the kingdom to come?

Leviticus 19:  28

***In reference to getting inked or tattoos***

Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you:  I am the LORD.

So all those who have pictures of the ‘virgin Mary’ or of Jesus himself – if you are serious in your quest to enter the Kingdom of God, have your tatts removed!  Even if it’s an hommage to your religious heroes/heroines.

Leviticus 19:  27

***In reference to “rounded haircuts”***

Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.

Does hair really matter in the afterlife?

Deuteronomy 23:  1

***In reference to injured men/men with their sexual organs removed***

He that is wounded in the stones, or hath his privy member cut off, shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD.

This is discriminatory and not very supportive of those who have a handicap.

Leviticus 19:  31

***In reference to psychics/wizards/witches***

Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them:  I am the LORD your GOD.

In the name of Christianity – pagans were put to death for worshiping the land and anyone who had a different religious belief other than Christianity – were tortured and put to death for their beliefs.  Not very Christian is it?

Leviticus 19:  16

***In reference to gossiping***

Thou shalt not go up and down as a tale bearer among thy people:  neither shalt thou stand against the blood of they neighbour; I am the LORD.

Was this verse created so that people would not question religious doctrine?  Or did the men that wrote the bible not like those back-stabbing gossips?

Deuteronomy 25:  11 – 12

***In reference to a man’s wife assisting in a physical altercation***

When man strive together one with another, and the wife of the one draweth near for to deliver her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth him, and putteth forth her hand, and taketh him by the secrets.

To me – this sounds like the men that are in conflict are showing weakness when accepting help from their wives.  How is that a weakness?  The statement is also very strange near the end “taketh him by the secrets” – sounds like that would hurt.

Exodus 21:  17

***In reference to children who curse at their parents***

And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.

Now, imagine a world where parents can kill their children for cursing at them.  If Christians took this verse literally – our jails would be overcrowded with those who deserved to be in there.

Mark 10:  11 – 12

***In reference to getting married after divorce***

Whosever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery:  and whosever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.

Are the huge spikes in divorce in the last 50 years solely instigated by those who are not Christian?  Or are Christians happily married to their life partners even if they are not in love with them so that they ensure a place in the kingdom to come?

Exodus 31:  14 – 15

***In reference to working on the ‘holy’ day***

Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you:  every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death:  for whosever doeth and work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.

Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD:  whosever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

Having one day a week off is great – but you can only enjoy this day by worshiping the LORD – no ands, ifs, or buts!

Corinthians 14:  34 – 35

***In reference to women preaching the word of God***

Let you women keep silence in the churches:  for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.

And if they will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home:  for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

I know many women who have a problem with the misogynistic verse.  Women are not allowed to speak in churches and must obey their husbands – it’s shameful for women to speak in churches????  How archaic.  They should all be removed at once.

Leviticus 10 – 11

***In reference to shellfish***

And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters , and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:

They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcase in abomination.

Again – I support this passage/verse because it saves many fish from death.  Christian seafood lovers everywhere – be mindful and follow the rules or else you will not enter the Kingdom of God.

Deuteronomy 22:  20 – 21

***In reference to a women losing her virginity prior to marriage***

But if this thing be true, and the tokens of virginity be not found for the damsel:

Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die:  because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father’s house:  so shalt thou put evil away from among you.

WOW – this is harsh.  Still don’t think the Bible was written by men.  Again, another misogynistic verse…God forbid that a women loses her virginity prior to marriage.  That should be rightfully taken away by a man in marriage.  Does this verse apply to men as well?  Shouldn’t the women have the right to stone their husbands to death if they are not virgins at marriage?

Leviticus 18:  22

***In reference to homosexuality***

You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female, it is an abomination.

Funny how the misogynistic men that wrote this verse don’t say anything about women that lie with other women…….

All kidding and sarcasm aside….I don’t see how these passages are inclusive, compassionate and promote a positive community.  For me, these Bible quotes clearly support my notion that the Bible was written by men to control the population(s).  To ensure that people conformed to what would benefit those men in power.

I wrote this post today in hopes that people empower themselves to ask questions of those in authority.  Just because it is written doesn’t mean that it is TRUE!  Especially when the words that were written – were written in the blood of those who didn’t want to conform and live their lives in chains.

Together, we can make the world a more positive one!

Do you trust your current local news channel.  Are they trustworthy and unbiased when it comes to news from your town, city, province/state or country?  So many of us are now getting our news information from various social media (Facebook, YouTube, Internet, Twitter, etc.) as an alternative to the news outlets of the past (television, newspaper and radio).  I think people are tired of the biased reporting from the old sources and are looking for respectful and realtime news.  There was a time when people respected journalists and their reporting.  Today – television is BIG BUSINESS.  The more viewers you can manage to secure – the more products you can sell, so why bother reporting news that matters or ‘real’ news from around the world.  Our current news agencies don’t want the general public to know the truth in terms of what is happening around the world – if news stories don’t make the United States look good, CNN, Fox, ABC, NBC, CBC, etc…will not report it.  Whistleblowers have to flee their countries in order to ensure their freedom for exposing the truth, shouldn’t they be treated as heroes for ensuring the truth gets out?  Our governments don’t think so.

Seek the truth yourself and don’t let the government take more of your freedoms/rights away.  The Canadian government attempted to push their internet surveillance bill  by disguising it as a way to ‘protect our children from sexual predators’.  Here are some articles regarding the Conservative governments push on Bill C-30 – Protecting Children From Predators Act:

National Post –

Huffington Post –

The Toronto Star –

The Globe and Mail –—we-need-bill-c-30/article546885/

Thankfully, this bill did not pass but it is a reminder that we must be vigilant in watching our government to ensure they don’t attempt to pass other such bills without public knowledge.

Don’t believe everything you hear.  We have the tools to be able to seek the truth and find different and un-biased resources to verify any bit of news or information.  Seek them out and make an informed decision on what you believe to be true.

Here is a YouTube channel the describes itself as follows:

Truthloader is a channel dedicated to finding amazing footage, alternative opinions and to digging deeper into stories than the mainstream media will.
We find the best examples of crowd-sourced video and independent content, then use our expertise to add context and analysis. We bring you news and views that will not get coverage in mainstream news outlets and we connect the dots to show you things they don’t want you to see.
We respond to the stories you’re interested in, so if you’ve got a story you’d love us to get to the bottom of, tweet us, Facebook us, or respond to our videos with a comment – and perhaps check out our reddit.

Throughout history – leaders, activists, politicians, celebrities, CEO’s, and ordinary people have given some very motivating and inspirational speeches, people like; Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Louise L. Hay, John F. Kennedy, Harvey Milk, Nelson Mandela, Dalai Lama, Barack Obama – I could go on.  No other speech has touched my heart and stirred so much emotion in me than the one I am about to share.  This speech comes from the movie ‘The Great Dictator’ starring Charlie Chaplin.  I always thought that Charlie Chaplin was a silent film actor and was never aware that he actually had a speaking role.  I am glad I came across this and that I am able to share it with you.   Let you imagination go as you listen to his words – visualize and think about what he is saying.  His words are profound and have never meant as much as they do today.  I hope this inspires you to act with compassion, without judgement, and only with love.  I also hope that this creates an awareness in you to act for the greater good of humanity so that we can all live in peace and with kindness towards one another.  The REVOLUTION of LOVE has begun and we will win!!!!!

Together, we can make the world a more positive one!

Original painting by Robert Pavao (please contact me if you are interested in a copy).

How many times have you heard the following statements about television personalities, athletes, celebrities, pop stars and even people you know:

“He/She is told old to be wearing that.”

“He/She should not be behaving like that – it isn’t age appropriate.”

“Why do old people think they can do that?”

“Eww, old people shouldn’t be having sex.”

“If you reach the age of retirement, you should stop working to let the younger generation become employed.”

“Old people are too fragile to engage in that kind of physical activity.”

I hope that I am never faced with any of the above.  I have been guilty of saying “what you are wearing is too young for you” to my husband Jason and I cringe when I think about it.  If you feel great about wearing something and it makes you feel good, what does it matter what others think?  Should you not be empowered to wear clothing that makes you feel comfortable, sexy, confident and make you feel good?  Whenever we judge others in what they wear, say or do – says much about yourself.  You are saying these things because they make YOU feel uncomfortable.  You may also be saying these things because society frowns against what isn’t considered to be ‘normal’.  But what is normal?  I would rather be thought of as original and eccentric than conform to what everyone else deems ‘normal’.

Many people feel that once you reach a certain age that you should act a certain way.  True ageism (as well as sexism) rears its ugly head in Hollywood and the music industry, especially as it relates to sexuality/gender.  Money (and sex) is what motivates Hollywood and the music business.  Who wants to hire an actress over 50 in a leading role (unless you are master of your craft such as;  Meryl Streep) when you can hire sexy actresses that will sell movie tickets?  Today – it’s Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence, Kirsten Stewart, Emma Watson, Amy Adams and Jennifer Anniston.  Actor’s don’t have this issue – Robert DeNiro, Robin Williams, George Clooney, Anthony Hopkins, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, and Morgan Freeman are all still headlining movies.

Ageism/Sexism seems to be much worse in music – especially if you are a women.  Case in point – Madonna.  She looks radiant and is in great shape but because she is over 50, many people believe that she shouldn’t be doing what she is doing or wear the clothing that she wears.  Do you hear people saying this about Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop, Jon Bon Jovi, Bono, Paul McCartney or Prince?  There is a double standard when it comes to being sexual for a female and a male.  When Madonna (or any other female pop star) grinds on stage with a younger male – she is a slut, a whore and a tramp but when a guy does the same thing, he’s a stud and cool.

I am glad that my thoughts on this issue have grown to be more opened to peoples individuality.  I am glad that there are people out there that don’t care what others think about in terms of their fashion sense and being young at heart.  Ultimately – if we are happy and enjoying doing what we are doing, the judgements of others should never deter us from staying happy.

Here is a great documentary on the subject of ageism – it is profound, inspiring, touching and motivating!  ENJOY!

What is happening in Toronto, Ontario Canada?  Toronto has been all over the news due to the mayor’s ‘crack-cocaine and excessive drinking’ scandal.  Will this be the legacy of Toronto’s latest mayor instead of his policies?  As a citizen of Toronto since 1973, I don’t ever remember there being a mayoral scandal that has had as much media attention as this.  Here are the mayor’s that I remember and a brief review of some of their accomplishments/scandals:

Art Eggleton (Liberal)  December 1980 – November 1991

  • Produced record level of social housing projects for low-income people.
  • 50 acres (200,00 m2) of new parks.
  • moved forward on implementing its new official plan which resulted in several new significant buildings in the downtown west, or railway land areas, including:  The Convention Centre, Skydome and The CBC Broadcast Centre.
  • Instrumental in the establishment of the Toronto Atmospheric Fund and other environmental programs that resulted in the City receiving a United Nations award.

***Did not support Toronto’s lesbian and gay community at their annual Gay Pride parade***

June Rowlands (Liberal)  December 1991 – November 1994

  • First female mayor of Toronto.
  • Came under fire for hiring a relative for a municipal position without an advertised process.
  • Best remembered and blamed for banning pop group ‘Barenaked Ladies’ from performing at a City Hall function, claiming that the name objectified women (Rowlands was out-of-town during this and it later became know that it was a mayoral staffer that thought the group’s name objectified women).
  •  Gained further notoriety when she seemed to be staggeringly uninformed about—and even completely unaware of—a large-scale youth riot that had shut down parts of Yonge Street, Toronto’s main street located just one block east of City Hall.

Barbara Hall (Liberal)  December 1994 – December 1997

  • 61st mayor of Toronto.
  • Last mayor to run before Toronto’s amalgamation of municipalities.
  • First Toronto mayor to participate and march in Toronto’s lesbian and gay Pride Parade.

Mel Lastman (Progressive Conservative)  January 1998 – November 2003

  • Prior to amalgamation – Mel Lastman was mayor of North York from 1972 to 1997 (Under the provincial leadership of Progressive Conservative, Mike Harris, Lastman’s position was abolished due to the city’s amalgamation.
  • Supported by many in North York for operating the city effectively and efficiently and for keeping property taxes low.
  • Gained national attention after multiple snowstorms, including the blizzard of 1999 and effectively closed the city.
  • Re-elected in November of 2000 with 80% of the vote.
  • Brought World Youth Day to Toronto in 2002.
  • Succeeded in pushing the development of the TTC’s Sheppard Subway line (the first new subway in decades).
  • Decided to officially recognize Gay and Lesbian Pride Week as opposed to Pride Day.

David Miller (New Democratic Party/Independent)  December 2003 – November 2010

  • Announced $70 million in waterfront investments over five years, dedicated toward new board walks, promenades, public places and related attractions (which resulted in Toronto having its first urban beach).
  • Mayoral run was endorsed by American environmental activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
  • David Miller’s first term in office focused on issues such as waterfront renewal, public transit and municipal reform.

Rob Ford (Independent/Progressive Conservative)  December 2010 – incumbent

  • Cancelled $60 personal vehicle registration tax.
  • Balanced frist budget with no tax increases and no significant changes – the budget used a surplus from 2010 and reserve funds to avoid raising taxes.
  • 2012 budget consultation review of services provided indicated a $700 million shortfall with no new taxes or cuts made.

Rob Ford has constantly been surrounded by controversy and unfortunately, that is what he will most likely be remembered for.  People don’t want to focus on the good that our politicians can initiate and accomplish when the scandals are much more interesting and what makes them like us.  Here are some of Rob Ford’s much publicized controversies:

  1. Arrested for DUI (drinking under the influence) and marijuana possession in Miami (1999).  Marijuana charge was withdrawn.
  2. Removed from a Maple Leafs hockey game for being visibly intoxicated and belligerent.
  3. In 2005 – Ford spoke out against donating $1.5 million to help prevent AIDS by saying, “If you are not doing needles and you are not gay, you wouldn’t get AIDS probably, that’s bottom line…those are the facts.”
  4. In 2007 – Ford remarked about cyclists – “What I compare bike lanes to is swimming with the sharks.  Sooner or later you’re going to get bitten… Roads are built for buses, cars, and trucks, not for people on bikes.  My heart bleeds for them when I hear someone gets killed, but it’s their own fault at the end of the day.”
  5. In 2008, he made a statement about Asians –  “Those Oriental people work like dogs.  They work their hearts out.  They are workers non-stop.  They sleep beside their machines.  That’s why they’re successful in life.  I went to Seoul, South Korea, I went to Taipei, Taiwan.  I went to Tokyo, Japan.  That’s why these people are so hard workers.  I’m telling you, the Oriental people, they’re slowly taking over.”
  6. Conflict of Interest Trial (2010) – the City of Toronto’s integrity commissioner ruled that then-Councillor Ford had not followed City Council’s Code of Conduct by using official letterhead and other council resources in fund-raising letters for his football foundation.
  7. On-going claims that Rob Ford is and alcoholic and smokes crack regularly.
  8. Hired known criminal as personal driver, paying him in access of $150,000/year.
  9. Asking municipal staff to complete personal tasks at his residence and often after hours.

Here is the most recent interview in which Rob Ford and his brother, councillor Doug Ford speak to CBC’s Peter Mansbridge:

In the first 3 minutes Rob Ford makes 3 comments that are not true:

1.  “The people elected me with the largest mandate in Canada’s history.”  FACT:  Mel Lastman had approximately 100,000 more votes in 2000 than Ford did in the 2010 election.

2.  “Having the lowest tax increase of any major city in North America.”  FACT:  Windsor, Ontario, Canada and San Antonio, Texas, USA, have tax freezes which have been in place for a lengthy period now.

3.  “I’ve showed up every day to work for the last 13 years.” FACT:  Rob Ford was declared absent from committee or council meetings 84 times out of 440 meetings.  Which constitutes an absentee record of 19% – attendance records for all councillors can be found via the following link:

Mayor Rob Ford has been in worldwide media, but not for his policies or the positive changes he has implemented but for his personal life.  He has given comedians around the world material that will last decades – he has been the topic of discussion on late night shows such as;  Real Time With Bill Maher, Jon Stewart, Jay Leno and David Letterman.  We are all responsible for the ‘celebrity status’ of our politicians.  This is wrong.  They should be held accountable for engaging in behaviour that is against the law, disrespectful, homophobic, racist and irresponsible.

Clearly – Mayor Ford has to ensure that he gets his personal life in order prior to retaining his duties as mayor of Canada’s largest city.  Mayor Ford (or any other mayor), should not be allowed to lie to the people who elected him.  His behaviour is not mayoral.  If a CEO of a major corporation displayed the same behaviour and incompetence that Mr. Ford has shown – shareholders would ensure the removal of that CEO.  Toronto City Council was accurate in revoking the mayor’s powers until he is fit to resume those duties.  The mayor is a representation of the city’s people and Mr. Ford has certainly been vocal on many social issues which are not respective and inclusive of Toronto’s very diverse community.  This is why more people need to get involved in the democratic process to ensure we elect government representation that is reflective of all their constituents.

Mr. Ford’s behaviour is not conducive to creating positive change in the world – which is clearly evident in some of his quotes above.  But, we must not allow this distraction to deter us from what needs to happen in our municipalities, towns, cities and countries.  People are becoming increasingly agitated about our government officials self-serving needs.  They need representation that will focus on the issues of our time – like the environment, social and financial inequality, health, unemployment, poverty and crime.  Instead of focusing on these issues – they continue to neglect the environment, promote tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy, forget about the health care system, and are responsible for committing crimes themselves.

I hope that Rob Ford manages to get his personal life in order, for his own sake.  But, reality is – WE NEED A REVOLUTION of positive change and it isn’t going to happen when we keep elected these self-serving politicians.

Together, we can make the world a more positive one!

Canada has much to be proud of, here are some of things we can be proud of:

  • CN Tower name one of the ‘Seven Wonders of the Modern World’ by the American  Society of Civil Engineers.
  • Discovery of insulin for the treatment of diabetes by Frederick Banting and Charles Best of Toronto, 1922.  Awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1923.
  • Development of Pablum in 1930:  three doctors from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, developed the infant food as a way to prevent and treat rickets in children.
  • Safer Stem Cells:  researcher, Andras Nagy, found a way to safely generate stem cells from adult human skill cells, opening the possibility in the future of using a patients own cells to reverse damage caused by disease, injury, aging or genetics and cure diseases whose treatment costs the Canadian health-care system billions of dollars a year.
  • Universal health care.
  • Gay marriage.
  • Home to some of the most-successful musicians of all-time such as; Celine Dion, Justin Bieber, Avril Lavigne, Joni Mitchell, Alanis Morissette, Shania Twain, Rush, Drake.  Shania Twain has the most successful (and best-selling) album by a female artist of all-time.
  • Dr. Roberta Bondar, Canada’s first woman in space and first neurologist in space.
  • Terry Fox – Marathon of Hope.

With so much to be proud of – how can Canada recently rank last in environmental protection?  A recent Globe and Mail article, written by Paul Waldie and citing the Washington-based Center for Global Development, indicated the following:

The Washington-based Center for Global Development assesses 27 wealthy nations annually on their commitment to seven areas that impact the world’s poor.  Canada came 13th in this year’s survey.  Denmark led the list, followed by Sweden and Norway, with Japan and South Korea at the bottom.

Canada dropped from 12th place last year and did far worse in the environmental protection category, where it ranked 27th.  Every other country made progress in this area except Canada, the centre said in a report on the rankings.

Here is a link to the complete Globe and Mail article  and link to the survey that the Center for Global Development completed

What can we expect from a country who withdrew from the Kyoto Protocol, the world’s only treaty governing the emissions of heat-trapping gasses.  Could this be because our Prime Minister is a big supporter of BIG OIL, the Keystone Pipeline and the horrible environmental ‘eyesore’ that is the Alberta Tar Sands?  Quite possibly, after all the tar sands is located in his home province of Alberta.

I was under the impression that world governments worked for the people, the greater good of their country and the planet.  When I hear of studies indicating that – Canada, as a wealthy nation is moving backwards, it completely deflated any respect and hope I have for our democratic system.  Why is our government not listening to the countless scientists that are saying we are at a very critical stage in the planets history.  Is it because our government(s) are trying to silence the scientific community?  Judge for yourself:

The above links is clear evidence that our government does not have the best interests of its citizens but the interests of big corporations and big oil.  If people do not become engaged or involved in government policies – then they can expect more of their civil liberties and freedoms to be taken away from them.  What can you do?  Talk to your friends and inform and educate yourself as to what is happening.  Write to your Member of Parliament and insist that you will not vote for them should they continue to disregard what the people want.  Write, blog, share information that is sent to you about the lack of action that our/any government has on the important issues, such as; the environment, automation of jobs, lack of jobs, health care and education.  The government should not be in business to ensure their laws protect those who are breaking laws, polluting our planet and making profits on the backs of the poor and middle-class.

When the Center for Global Development publishes their report next year – will we have improved?  Probably not.  Why – because our government will continue to support BIG CORPORATIONS and DIRTY OIL.  We need new faces in politics – people who are not motivated by power, money or greed but motivated by their convictions to reach positive resolutions for the planet and its inhabitants.  If we elected people who are motivated by their convictions for positive change, we could make a dent in climate change, CO2 emissions, unemployment, human rights issues, poverty, starvation, crime, financial inequality and violence perpetuated by war.

Together, we can make the world a more positive one!

As an animal activist – I ensure that I do everything I can to stop the inhumane treatment of any animal.  I don’t buy leather or any other clothing materials that are made from the suffering of animals.  I am vegan and I don’t support any behaviour that provides gratification by exploiting animals.  Here is a list of activities that I find heinous and we should do anything we can to ensure that they cease:

  • Running of the bulls (Spain)
  • Stomping on animals
  • Rodeos
  • Horse Racing
  • Dog Racing/Dog Fighting
  • Cock Fighting
  • Circus
  • Any type of animal confinement (zoo’s, Sea World, Marineland, etc.)
  • Fishing
  • Bull Fighting
  • Seal Cull (Canada)

I am perplexed how anyone can justify killing animals for the thrill of killing them.  Many animals are on the brink of extinction and yet, hunters proudly pose beside the animal they gunned down without any remorse.  It says a lot about a person when they can lift a gun, aim, and then shoot the life out of anything – whether it human or animal.  How can someone feel joy and ecstasy when they have just taken the life essence out of another soul?  Animals deserve the same respect as humans do – they cry out in pain, they cry out when hurt and they cry out in anger.

Melissa Bachman is the latest ‘hunter’ to pose beside her kill all in the name of sport.  Melissa is a television personality who presents the American hunting show, Winchester Deadly Passion.  Here is a quote from her hunt – “An incredible day hunting in South Africa! Stalked inside 60-yards on this beautiful male lion… What a hunt!”

PS – I only post this photo so that you can see the lack of respect this individual has for another living and breathing soul…..

Melissa Bachman

It breaks my heart to know that people receive gratification from killing in cold blood.  There is no justification for this and Melissa Bachman should feel ashamed (clearly, she does not).

I am an avid believer of karma.  I don’t ever wish harm or violence on any living soul but I know that Melissa’s life will only attract what she gives out into the universe.  Hopefully she has learned her lesson from all the negative backlash she is receiving in posting this picture.  Hopefully – she will think twice before ending the life of another helpless animal.

Here are some facts about lions:

  1. Lions live a nomadic lifestyle in groups called ‘prides’, with a pack mentality that is usually led by the females.
  2. Male lions grow up to 10 feet in length.
  3. Lions bodies are built for hunting.
  4. Female lions mate about every two years giving birth to one to six cubs (60 to 70 percent of cubs will die in the first year of their lives).
  5. Life span of lions in the wild – male (12 years), female (15).
  6. The conservation status for an African Lion is considered to be very vulnerable and critically endangered for the Asiatic Lion.
  7. Population of African lions has been almost cut in half the past two decades because of retaliatory killings by farmers (whose livestock the lions eat), as well as trophy hunting and habitat loss.
  8. Human encroachment on habitat has left the Gir population of lions highly endangered.

We can get involved by doing several things:  Donate to WWF to help the conservation of all endangered animals and their homes, don’t purchase any items that contain any animal products – synthetic fibres are just as good, research the companies you buy your products from to ensure that no animals were harmed in the making of those products (PETA has a great list for ‘cruelty free shopping’, and finally – Please don’t support any program the glorifies hunting or the inhumane treatment of animals (rodeos, bull-fighting, horse racing, dog fighting, etc).  We must show respect, compassion and gratitude (if you eat them) for all animals not just the ones we consider to be our pets.  Here are the links to PETA and WWF:

Can humanity ever come to a consensus to live in a world where everyone works together for the greater good of the planet, environment, and humanity’s survival?  Do we really have to rely on the methods of those who only want to benefit themselves?  Is Utopia a reality?  Absolutely.  Here are 2 videos that will explain how this pre-conceived notion can be reality.

Jacque Fresco thought of this project as a way to look at the future with a different approach as to how we live life today.  Jacque believes that we can live in a future where war, poverty, hunger and debt would be things of the past as indicated on The Venus Project’s official website.  Their directive states, in the section ‘What is The Venus Project’ “The Venus Project proposes an alternative vision of what the future can be if we apply what we already know in order to achieve a sustainable new world civilization”

Basic Income Europe has a great concept in removing financial inequality – Here is their idea as per their website:

The emancipatory Unconditional Basic Income is defined by the following four criteria:
universal, individual, unconditional, high enough to ensure an existence in dignity and participation in society.
An Unconditional Basic Income (UBI) or Citizen’s Income is a guaranteed income, given to all in addition to any other income they might receive. By advancing equality and economic participation while enabling simpler welfare systems, UBI leads to a fairer and more efficient society.

Could these two very progressive ideas become reality – YES, if more people become involved.  If we don’t try innovative ideas such as these could never happen.  People around the world are tired, they hunger for positive change but governments and those who have power and money don’t want this positive change to come because it will tip the balance of power.  So many of us are tired of the old ideas that continue to create financial inequality, environmental catastrophe’s, war, starvation, poverty and crime.  It’s time for new ideas – ideas that will benefit the poor, the hungry, the disenfranchised, the planet and humanity.  It’s time for a PEACEFUL REVOLUTION.  It’s time for Utopia.

Together, we can make the world a more positive one!
